Celebrating 40 years of diplomatic relationship between South Korea-Indonesia, Association of Korean Contemporary Artists works together with South Korea Embassy and Indonesian National Gallery (Galeri Nasional Indonesia/GNI) organized the second Korean contemporary art exhibition in 14-25 June 2013 in Exhibition Hall C of Indonesian National Gallery – Jakarta. This exhibition involved 32 Korean artists and 21 Indonesian artists showcasing two and three-dimensional artworks.
In the last couple of years, Korean art develops significantly and influence the course of global modern art. Korean even manages to attract the world’s attention from Chinese and Japanese contemporary art that, according to some, lacks diversity. One of Korean artists who now a key figure in global contemporary art is Nam June Paik who pioneers the emergence of video art and inspires the development of new art media. What factors contribute to the success of Korean artists? Where Indonesian artists be compared to Korea?
- For the second time – since 2006 – Korean and Indonesian contemporary artists organized a joint art exhibition as part of celebrating 40 years of bilateral relationship between two countries. There were 32 Korean artists and 21 Indonesian colleagues participated in this 12-day exhibition showcasing artworks in two and three dimensions.
- Korean contemporary artists are very diverse in terms of themes, creative ideas, media and methods. Artworks showcased in Indonesian National Gallery express the bold side of Korean artists in exploring ideas and media by going beyond boundaries established by modern art.
- Learning from developed countries in Europe, the US and China, Korean government realizes that art and culture can be effective ‘weapon’ to unify global community. It takes a strong art infrastructure to support a country’s art development. This includes providing facilities of art schools, galleries, museums and auction houses.
In contemporary art scene, Korea has managed to stand equally amongst Chinese and Japanese artists. One of Korean key successes is the availability of art education facilities that automatically influence the number of emerging artists in the country. Korea’s determination in promoting its artists successfully attracts the attention of Western collectors. How about Indonesia and its struggle with the discourse of good art infrastructure system?
